Why my computer is so messed up? I have to run anti this anf that everyday?

I have windows defender, firewall, AVG antivirus. Also I have free version of Superantispyware and Ad-aware 2007.

The last two I have to run them everyday, Ad-aware finds average of 130 infections everyday! Only my dad and I use this computer, I took a look to his account settings and everything seems to be in order. It just took me around an hour to get the computer to work, had to reboot twice and is still ridiculously slow, but if I reboot again is start from the beginning. The slow can't be memory related because the harddrive memory is mostly unused.

This is really making me miserable, I am studying computer science and I can't run the compiler, thus can't do homework.

Any idea what is wrong with this machine?

Urgently needing a spyware program?

In the service, my computer was put AVG anti-Virus and Spyware Dorctor. The Anti viru program seems to work ok, but I have just noticed that Spyware does not work at all and that it requires update which goes with payment. Beside my computer is infected and now I am really worried.

I use Panda on our customers, its by far one of the better ones out of the lot, speed is ok even for older PC and detection is high, the Internet Security Suite is what I would suggest as it also handles spams in a normal way, rather than changing your ISP settings .

Avast! Antivirus is completely free and very effective. I used it to replace Norton and it found viruses that Norton did not.

How much longer will I be able to use my computer...?

...until it becomes so outdated or worn out that I have to buy a new one? It's a HP that was purchased on August of 2002.

Total Physical Memory: 254 MB (in use for virtualization)

CPU Type: Intel 1800 MHz Pentium 4

Default Printer: Lexmark X1100 Series

Hard Disks: One original 40GB Western Digital with 1.5GB free and one fairly new 160GB Maxtor 3200 with 140GB free.

I also have avast! Antivirus installed, but that's about it. I've had to reinstall Windows once.

That PC is good enough to last for several years.

Add more memory and you'll get a performance boost. Put a good video card and you still can play games with it.

Just do some regular cleaning of the insides of your PC, vacuum it to remove accumulated dust.

if you do regular maintance like HD defragmentation. regular Windows updates, antivirus update, it will last for 2 -3 more years
Only your RAM and Processor are getting outdated. Get SP2 and you can run for a few more years.
I have a similar HP but I got it with Millennium 2000 and installed Windows XP Home Edition ..so I think it would last two more years but I don't think I will keep it this long.

Avast scans just about everything, but will not block things like a firewall. An alternate choice, is to run your favorite free Antivirus, with your favorite free firewall. I have used Avast and ZoneAlarm (From ZoneLabs) in conjunction and it worked great. There are many free firewalls out there that you can look at.

Avast free edition does not have firewall. You can use avast and AvG at same time. Only paid version have it.
