Those two programs won't conflict if you use the appropriate settings...

If you have an active subscription to Norton, make sure that it is up to date. If your subscription is over, then use RevoUninstaller to uninstall it. Then install AVG in its place. Regardless of which of these you do, then install ThreatFire.

You should also visit the Google Pack website in order to download Spyware Doctor for free.

I would also recommend that you use Mozilla's Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. Once it's installed, you should also install the Adblock Plus add-on. After it's been installed, it will ask you if you want to add certain premade lists. It's up to you to decide what's considered a resource hog, but here's an easy way to decide for yourself.

Open Task Manager.

Go to the processes tab. Sort the processes by name.

You should see several processes that start with either mc****** or mp****** grouped together. (On the test PC where I'm running McAfee, there are 13 processes.) Once you have them grouped together, look at the memory use for each process; if needed, open calc and add them up. On my test system, they're using between 80MB and 90MB of RAM, depending on the activity at any given time. If I'm actually doing something within McAfee, that can boost the usage over 100MB.

It's Kaspersky antivirus but it only scans files and local e-mails. It doesn't do network traffic monitoring, no P2P tranfser protection, no bots/spyware detection... It's the best for scanning files and e-mails, but as a fully featured antivirus product it lacks many features.

The bigger question is, what did you do that resulted in 1318 viruses? It sounds like you need to do more than just getting a virus scanner, you need to change how you use your computer. A virus scanner can only do so much.

Get yourself a couple of good spyware cleaners. I recommend Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. Both are free. After you've downloaded and got the latest updates for both restart your computer in safe mode. Safe mode is important because you don鈥檛 want any of the spyware or viruses running while you鈥檙e doing the scans. If they are running, the scan programs can鈥檛 delete them. Do each spyware scan one at a time plus a virus scan while in safe mode. Hopefully that should slove the problem. See the links below.

Start off with Firefox (getfirefox.com), this crap would be blocked since it's the best browser out there, in my opinion. Internet Explorer is notorious for letting these things get by. Also, download AdAware (lavasoft.de) and SpywareBlaster (javacoolsoftware.com).
Sounds like you've got way too much freeware on your computer.

All you need is Spybot for spyware and adware... I would question whether or not you got it from the vendor http://www.safer-networking.org and if so, whether it is properly installed, properly configured, etc..

Sounds like you've got some freeware antivirus which is pretty nutty if you ask me.. antivirus is not something you can have free.. it really MUST be properly configured and automatically downloaded updates.. which freeware has no incentive to do and usually does not perform real-time scanning which is essential.

So I strongly recommend you chuck that freeware and get antivirus / firewall from a RELIABLE vendor.. like mcafee, norton, kaspersky, etc.. properly configure it, and ensure it's enabled and automatically updating..

Make sure your pop-up blocker is turned on in IE %26gt;%26gt; tools %26gt;%26gt; internet options %26gt;%26gt; privacy tab %26gt;%26gt; check pop-up blocker.

A couple of people have mentioned fine ways to delete your cached files, and there's even been a good answer about how if you think you have a RAM problem, maybe you need more. I don't want to be repetitive or poach, so I won't repeat those answers.

I suspect the heart of your problem is that either a) your computer is running slow so you think you need more RAM, b) you're running out of disk space, which deleting cached files will not measurably help, or c) you're trying to get rid of something specific in your cached files.

If it's 'a' or 'c', then you have all the info you need. If it's 'b' then your cached and temporary files probably only consume about 150MB or less and getting rid of them won't help much at all. You can reduce the size of your recycle folder (Right click on Recycle Bin %26gt; Properties %26gt; resize down into the 1 or 2 percent range, reboot) and your System Restore (Right click My Computer %26gt; System Properties %26gt; System Restore %26gt; run the slider down to about 5 percent). If that's not enough, start offloading your mp3, mpg/wmv/avi files and any ISO's you might have.

Yes it's fine, they won't clash. I use Spy-bot and Ad-aware.

They don't automatically check your system, you have to tell them to do it. They are both free for personal use. And one will normally pick up something the other doesn't.

Why not install 2 antivirus? Well, anti-virus software searches for just that, viruses, although some are very good, often they will not search for spyware and adware. For example if you download a free game, the game may contain adware, but you virus checker will not pick it up. And some anti virus software are too powerful and will block everything slowing down your internet connection to a snails pace.

I would recommend have one anti-virus software running all the time, such as Norton Anti-virus (or a good free one such as Avast!), as well as the two other programs, Spy-bot and Ad-aware, run these other two about once a week independently, and this should keep things under control.

Most antiviruses now only download new definitions rather than the whole database. When I had dialup and used avast it updated really quickly.

Windows update is a different matter, some months the downloads are quite small but sometimes they can be quite large. With servicepacks though you can usually find a magazine with it on the coverdisc after they are released.

I would overall suggest getting broadband though, once you do you won't want to return to dialup. Hopefully you are not asking this as you are one of the people who can't get broadband

Have you got a Windows Install CD? Insert it and try to repair Windows. Or better, use the recovery console and delete kaspersky. Then try to restart.

And there was a special switch for the boot.ini file which deactivates the bootlogo and shows what the computer is really doing. Open msconfig on your PC and try to find out which one it was. Then look where it fails.

hi i hav quite a few things rong wid my del laptop.

1)my avg free edition (antivirus) always says that i need 2 restart my comp to finish off updates. i hav tried setin it so that it either updates on next comp restart or restart immediately with user confirmation. neither work. i dnt want 2 hav 2 restart my comp as soon as i hav turned it on. my other comp doesnt do this, it always downloads the update file when i log on, and presumably updates wen i turn it of, as i never get this mesage.

Today I started getting porn popup advertisements. I haven't been going to any different sites or any sites that I should get them from. Last night my hubby went to ultimate-guitar.com, but I didn't start getting them until today and he said he never gets those kind from that site. I get them after I click to check my mail on Yahoo messenger. I use NoAds popup kilIer and it closes them, but they keep coming back. I agree with the post on the AVG. It just isn't as good. But its free, so you get what you pay for. There are many reasons, but will advise looking into something that is truly as good as your firewall.

.exe are executional files and are commonly used by computer programs, but they can be viruses. If you downloaded this file from the vendor's website, then it should be safe. If you got it from anywhere else like limewire, edonkey... then don't open it.

How old is your monitor? It could be going bad. If it is a CRT(Cathode Ray Tube) monitor it would not surprise me if it was the monitor itself. If you can get access to another monitor, hook your computer to another monitor and see if this problem still persists.

get a 1gb of ram it really makes it run faster trust me also try running a disk cleanup that works good also
My advice to you is to take all of the important files that you have saved on the computer and transfer them over to either floppy disks, CDs, or jump drives. Once you save them on something different and delete them it will make your computer work a little better because it won't have so much unneccessary files on it. This should work, I did all of that and what I am telling you to my 15 year old desktop and now it runs smoothly all together, hope this helps and good luck.
Try writing some of your bigger files to disc to clear up room on your hard drive. The problem is, you have too much stuff on it so every application is slow.

Why does my pc take so much time to boot?

i hv windows xp, sp2. i am using avg free edition antivirus software. when i am booting my pc, the desktop appears quite fast but in the taskbar, i see a window named smart wizard and when i move my mouse over the taskbar the hourglass appears indicating some sort of work is going on. the smart wizard disappears after 3 to 4 minutes and only then my pc is ready for use. For my pc, I have too many programs on the task bar, both right side and left. By removing some tasks, I sped it up. Then I added the Google side bar-- and slowed it down! That's pretty clear to me.

If you click ctr alt del you'll get the task manager up, have a look in the processes and see if there's sneaky programs running. you might find that there's a program eating your memory up.

Also I use multiple spyware scanners as sometimes one won't catch something that another does.

I did that with my system using Spyware Doctor, and discovered I had an infection called MalwareAlarm, where it claimed to be detecting spyware on my system (when in fact it was itself the infection).

I then took screenshots of Spyware Doctor detecting and removing the infection (see link below). The scan was free too, and it found things that Norton missed, so I knew it would be worth the money.

You could do the same thing with Spyware Terminator as well, or even compare it with Spyware Doctor to see which one catches the most infections/threats.

I recently got a Dell laptop with an Athlon 64 processor and 1GB of RAM, and it has Vista. It seems like it boots awfully slow and it loads programs slow too. I'm going to try uninstalling the antivirus like someone else said, but I really think it's Vista!

Anyway, I heard a story about a tech from IBM who said Vista really needs 4GB of RAM to run effectively. Is it true? I wouldn't be surprised... but then again he also says you need 2GB of RAM for Windows XP, and I don't really agree with him there. 512MB is probably ok, and 1GB seems plenty good.

As for finding out if you can upgrade it, Crucial is pretty good in this respect. They can usually tell you exactly how big of and how many sticks of RAM your machine will support. According to them your machine comes with 2 slots and can support up to 2GB of RAM, so if you want to upgrade you would need to buy two 1GB sticks of RAM. You could buy one 1GB stick of RAM, but (almost definitely) it has two 512MB sticks right now, so you'd only be upgrading to 1.5GB.

I'm thinking of uninstalling Mcafee security centre and using AVG free as my antivirus software.

What I would like advice on is, if I buy a wireless router that has a hardware firewall built in, would the hardware firewall along with the Windows XP SP2 software firewall be enough or would I need a stronger software firewall than the one built into SP2.

I was getting fatal exception 0E errors when starting IE 6. I downloaded and ran some free programs for antivirus (Avast!), a windows utilities, and a registry defragger and was still having exception 0E messages come up. I ran the defragger and then Win 98 setup started running at startup. I always exit and the computer turns off. If I allow it to continue, will I lose my saved files (1,000+ music files, among others), or will I be presented with an option to repair? Thanks!

Did you check to see if the 98 CD was in your drive? That may be what's causing the "setup" to load. Otherwise, do whatever you can to boot normally so you can rescue your files.

It sounds like your system is beyond repair; the best thing you can do is backup your files as soon as you possibly can.

As soon as you save all your files, you should either reinstall Windows 98 with a new file system or switch operating systems entirely. Back in the day, it was not at all uncommon for people to reinstall Windows 98 once every month or two because the system naturally breaks over time. Good operating systems don't do this.
